The Three Step Method

The Three Step Method is a conflict prevention and conflict resolution tool we teach to the students at Flora M. Singer.

By using the Three Step Method, students gain interpersonal skills and self confidence as independent problem solvers.

Step 1:

Do you know you ___?

Ask the question, "Do you know you ___" and state the other person's behavior.  For example: Do you know you just called me a mean name? Pause. Behavior changed? Problem solved.  Not yet? Move to step 2.

Step 2:

I don't like that. Please stop.

Tell the other person to stop. Pause. Give the other person a chance to think. Behavior changed? Problem solved. Not yet? Move to step 3.

Step 3:

Since you haven't listened, now I will need to tell an adult.

As an adult, this is where you step in to help the children problem solve. Try to facilitate a conversation instead of giving solutions.
